Properties of Honey in Wound Care

Honey is a wound dressing with multiple bioactive actions that work in concert to expedite the healing process.

Physical properties supporting wound healing are:

  • Acidity – increases the release of oxygen from hemoglobin making the wound environment less favourable for destructive proteases
  • High Osmolarity – draws fluid out of the wound bed to create an outflow of lymph as occurs with negative pressure wound therapy
  • Antibacterial Activity – honey has broad spectrum antibacterial action.  All honey has activity due to hydrogen peroxide. This activity is often deactivated by the enzyme catalase which is exuded from wounds.  Manuka honey has a second antibacterial action due to methylglyoxal which remains active even in high exudate wounds. Manuka honey has been shown to be effective against bacteria most commonly involved wound infection, including so-call “super bugs” MRSA and VRE
  • Stimulates Immune response
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Autolytic debridement of wound
  • Removes unpleasant odors
  • Minimizes scarring
  • Painless and no damage when changing wound dressings

What Our Customers Say

Love love this store!!! I needed some Manuka Honey and grabbed a bar of Manuka soap as well. It has antimicrobial properties that make it great for treating sensitive areas. She suggested not taking anymore than a teaspoon at a time internally. Really, really wanted some of the Cinnamon infused Honey I picked up at the German Market, but it is HIGHLY addictive.
